Medical physics is also called biomedical physics

Physics has for decades played a crucial role in the development of new techniques for medicine and is becoming increasingly important in understanding the behavior of biological systems. Biomedical physics deals with applications of physics to questions of biology and medicine.

Medical physics is also called biomedical physics, medical biophysics, applied physics in medicine, physics applications in medical science, radiological physics or hospital radio-physics which is, in general, the application of physics concepts, theories, and methods to medicine or healthcare. Medical physics departments may be found in hospitals or universities.  The biomedical physics seeks to understand the role of physical processes occurring on molecular, cellular, or macroscopic scales; in vital biological functions, ranging from the interaction of chemicals with DNA, to the extraction of oxygen from red blood cells, to the generation of complex electrical signals in the brain and nervous system; and physical principles of medical devices.

Medical physics is generally split into two major subgroups, specifically radiation therapy and radiology. Medical physics of radiation therapy can involve work such as dosimetry, linac quality assurance, and brachytherapy. Medical physics of radiology involves medical imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, computed tomography, positron emission tomography, and x-ray.

The main areas of application are treatment of cancer by ionizing radiation (radiation oncology), imaging with x-rays, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance (diagnostic radiology), imaging and treatment with radioisotopes (nuclear medicine), and protection of occupational workers in radiation related industries (health physics). Other areas of study include electroencephalography, electrocardiography, thermography, hyperthermia, optical imaging, and RF and laser surgery.

Journal of Medical Physics and Applied Sciences aim is to publish the work and reports on maintaining and improving the quality, safety and cost-effectiveness of healthcare services through patient-oriented activities requiring expert action, involvement or advice regarding the specification, selection, acceptance testing, commissioning, quality assurance/control and optimised clinical use of medical devices and regarding patient risks and protection from associated physical agents (e.g. x-rays, electromagnetic fields, laser light, radionuclides) including the prevention of unintended or accidental exposures.

The Journal of Medical Physics and Applied Sciences publish the scholarly articles on open access forum, after a thorough peer review. It publishes all relevant topics in the area of cancer.
